Description

Ahhh I will write more here another time with more specifics and information, I'm not feeling too hot today. Sorry for any typos!

Pofure madness, they're quite fun to draw.
Pofure are a closed species!

Pofure

Pofures are an extraterrestrial organism hailing from the planet Sen-Ri. They are composed of billions of tiny machines called nanites; these nanites exhibit both organic and non-organic characteristics, making for a unique hybrid of two worlds.  Pofures are beings made to explore; while there is a plentiful population on their home world, they can be found in the furthest regions of the galaxy accross many universes.  Highly social and adaptive, Pofure can come in many shapes and sizes! they are also very adept at shape-shifting, although some limitations do exist.

Nanites

As stated above, the nanites that compose a Pofure share both organic and non-organic compounds. Their primary protocol is to maintain three major cloud formations (i.e. shapes). Like the cells within a human body, groups of nanites are each specialized for a specific function, restricting the number of shapes they may take. Although this prevents free-form shape shifting, they are still more than capable of using what they have in very creative ways! As a pofure expands their code and energy, they may even become able to take on even more protocols, enabling them to take on additional forms.

Nanites are powered by a variety of cosmic rays and radiation, including but not limited to solar, nuclear,  and antimatter emissions. This makes them the most powerful and vital in habitats where the atmosphere is thin, or contains readily available radiation. Specialized nanites form into patches of highly-conductive coating called "Surge Breakers" along the Pofure's anatomy, allowing for intake of such energy. Surge Breakers are also capable of protecting the Pofure from harmful spikes in energy by either absorbing or dissipating unexpected energy.

A Pofure's shape shifting comes from the ability to fine-control the location and density of these nanites into various formations. They are hard-wired with the shape of two forms - their humanoid and bird-like basal form - followed by a tertiary mode which is obtained through exploration of shape and its inhabitants. This third form is known as a BETA form, for its experimental nature. While retaining some of their original, key characteristics, Pofure are capable of mimicking a specific organism of an alien world. This includes both plants and animals. This third form is not easily changed once the code has been written; it is so much so that it can generally be defined as a permanent addition to their code. The only reason a Pofure would change its beta form would be to assimilate to a different planet for long-term purposes.

In any of the forms, unused, multi-purpose nanites are stored in the mane and other such bodies of 'fluff.'  This is often a direct correlation to their health; the fuller the mane, the better the Pofure is faring. Sometimes, after absorbing a plentiful meal of cosmic rays, the Surge Breakers on their bodies may glow for a short amount of time. This glow dissipates, and so does their fluff as energy levels deplete, leaving smaller and smaller portions of usable nanites (this correlates to the way nanites tend to 'stick' to other nanites when their energy levels are low, reducing the space between them, thus making it seem as if there is less physical matter). Once energy levels reach under 5%,  Surge Breakers begin to form temporarily along their bodies in an attempt to absorb as much evergy as possible; in extreme cases, their 'batteries' may be damage through repeated exposure to low energy, making for a permanent increase in the Surge Breakers along a Pofure's body. While energy loss through transformation/power use/etc. is the most common form of depletion, nanites themselves may become damaged and unusable after physical trauma. Additional nanites may be recruited by finding 'colonies' of them which are scattered throughout the universe - nanites left behind by Pofures in one way or another may sometimes form such colonies, making for valuable deposits that other Pofures may use.

Perhaps due to their semi-organic nature, nanites are capable or partial regeneration. As long as the nanite capsule is not completely severed, damaged particles may heal with time. Each regeneration however allows for a possibility of code corruption, which may prove harmful if enough errors are accumulated. As corrupted code accumulates, function of the nanites decrease, making a Pofure more susceptible to permanent shut-down.

Culture & Life

The planet of Sen-Ri is very unforgiving, dictating a very survival-based, pragmatic culture within the Pofure.  Their Basal form allows them to survive the frigid temperatures of the planet, and is all around well adapted to provide optimal fitness for the Pofure individual.  If Pofures are indeed artificial life forms, their creators have long gone from the planet; towers of ice-covered buildings scatter the surface of Sen-Ri, now intricate homes of most of the ecosystem surviving. Underground, magma that runs through the planet through large channels heat the earth around it, providing for warm shelter. Underground ecosystems may even sport plant-life which are different from Earth plants as they have no need to photosynthesize. Instead, these plants rely solely on the minerals and gasses in their environment to survive; many native Pofure use these plants as bedding material or, if big enough, nests.

Pofure do not breed like most organisms, rather, they combine the coding of a 'core nanite' and, quite literally, crush the two nanites together. These two nanites look different from all other nanites, and behave differently as well. Like stones of solidified electricity these core nanites glitter, and become a hue of the two nanites once they are combined, naturally forming into a larger nanite that will become the seed for a Pofure. It takes many years to procure the general nanites needed for the seed to be a complete Pofure, a task placed upon its parents. Luckily, it seems nanites are currently quite plentiful in the universe (another mystery for another time, given their hazy origins), making the task difficult, but not impossible. It typically takes a pair about 5 years to nurture a Seed to a full Pofure. This is relatively trivial for their life span, as Pofures are typically seen as immortal as long as they keep their energy up and their nanites safe.

As shape shifters, looks are not a large portion of the Pofure culture; bias or segregation depending on one's physical appearance is just about nonexistent, making for a very large variety of natural appearances they may take on. Such variations may be seen in Pofures who have made their homes in other worlds, although many adopt the attribute of clothing and accessorizing which is nonexistent within their native culture. If it fits, they will wear it, and without too much apprehension at the thought - rather, many enjoy wearing clothes once it has been discovered. Similarly, gender-binary ideas are foreign, simply in the fact that they lack gender. They seem to understand the concept more or less, but often do not apply it to themselves in most contexts.

Very much social creatures, Pofures do have the idea of kin; it is not uncommon for them to stay in pods consisting of their brothers, sisters, and 'parents.' They are more likely to defend these individuals than they are a complete stranger, although they do still maintain a positive affinity with their own kind. They hold a less amiable stance to other species, often treating them with caution, or even with a scientific, cold observing eye. This is presumably from their origins as exploratative agents - there is a primitive part of them who have data collection as a priority. As they assimilate into the culture of the planet however, they may become more open to interaction with others (basically just like anyone else!).
